Targovishte region has an area of 710.4 km2 2 or that 13.6% of the North Eastern Region and 2.4% of the territory of Bulgaria. It consists of 5 municipalities - Targovishte, Popovo, Omurtag, Opaka and Antonovo.
Targovishte municipality is located on an area of 872 sq.km. in the eastern part of the Danube Plain. Municipal administrative center is the town of Targovishte. Its proximity to the exit points of the country -125 km Varna and Ruse - 100 km. makes the municipality natural strategic crossroad in these directions.
